Of my 3 trips out here, this was the shortest- only 8 days (all of Fall break week, plus the previous weekend). With that, I've spend almost 4.5 months down here- pretty sweet and I've loved every minute of it. This time the trip had a meaning: find my mom a house. Apparently my raving about the place convinced her to move here. She sold her house and moved into a short term apartment in Lafayette until she finds a place here. After several days of searching we came down to two: one out near Starr Pass and one off of Mountain Ave. She's placed a big on the house off of Mountain, so hopefully we get it! It's a nice 4 bed room, 2 bath house, ~1700 sqft. It needs a little yard work, but I'm planning on building her a straw-bale stucco wall when I come down in December.
Sadly, the Aero Kitty was not able to make the trip due to a seized seat post (which is now un-seized/broken thanks to the heroic efforts of Eric Bales- thanks for getting that bugger out!). With that, I had to rent a bike, not ideal but it worked. I got a new Trek 1.2 Aluminum bike with Shimano 105. I'm extremely thankful for the help that Fairwheel gave me in getting the bike, that being said...it confirmed my dislike of Trek and Shimano:
-it had a weird geometry. Probably should have got the 58. I had to flip the seat post to get it right...
-Shimano shifters gave me blisters, I don't know how, but they did.
-It had a compact, and while that did allow me to do stupid things like big ring Mt. Lemmon...I really hate compacts.
On the plus side:
-It was stooopid stiff.
-Never got a flat (seriously thinking about rocking conti's down here next time)
-Handled awesome (and descended really well)
All in all, not a bad bike, but I'd never buy it.
It makes me sad to have to leave again, but I'll hopefully be back by Dec. 9...which is only 50 some days away. I can do that. Shame they don't have a HK department or Sports Psych. department here... I'd transfer in a second.
